Cleveland, Ohio — The Cleveland State University Athletics Department announced Tuesday that Director of Athletics Mike Thomas has taken on more roles within the NCAA and Horizon League.

A press release dated Jan. 23 said that Thomas will take on three new roles, including Chair of Horizon League Council, liaison to the NCAA Division I Ethics Coalition through the NCAA Men’s Basketball Oversight Committee and a representative of the Horizon League on the Division I-AAA Athletics Directors Association executive committee.

The increased roles within the NCAA and Horizon League are part of Thomas’ efforts to bring reform to CSU’s Athletic Department and give the department more name value.

Thomas’ 30-plus years of athletic administration experience — including stints at Cincinnati, Akron and Illinois as Director of Athletics before arriving at CSU — have built him a strong rapport with his colleagues.

In his new role as Chair of Horizon League Council, according to the press release, Thomas will serve as the head of the governing body of the Horizon League.

The release also says as liaison to the Ethics Coalition, Thomas will “help promote ethical conduct among NCAA Division I men’s basketball coaches through education, leadership and mentoring.”

Finally, as the Horizon League representative on the Division I-AAA Athletics Directors Association executive committee, Thomas will work in a group aimed to “enhance initiatives common to its Division I-AAA membership,” according to the release.

On top of these new duties, Thomas already represents CSU and the Horizon League on the NCAA Division I Council, is the Chair of the Horizon League Basketball Issues Committee,  is a Greater Cleveland Sports Commission Board of Trustees member and helps with the Division I-AAA Mentoring Program.
